Coach Raul excelled in gymnastics in high school. He was a three-time state qualifier, and was a two-time state finalist finishing 10th on floor exercise his senior season. He attended the University of Illinois, where the Illini won Big Ten team championships and twice qualified for the NCAA championships. He held the team’s high scores on floor exercise and vault his sophomore year. Raul was a Big Ten finalist two years, placing 8th in floor exercise. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1984.

Raul distinguished himself as an international gymnast on the Mexican National Team from 1980-83. He was a silver medalist in the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Sports Games and a Pan American team member in 1983.

When coaching, Raul enjoys watching the boys overcome fears and challenges that gymnastics presents. His philosophy is “It’s not a matter of ‘if’. It’s a matter of when.”
