Level Progression FAQs
Understanding Our Level Progression at Viking Gymnastics
At Viking Gymnastics, our move-up process is designed to help each gymnast progress safely, confidently, and with strong fundamentals. Advancement is based on skill mastery, strength, consistency, and coach recommendation, not just time spent in a class.
We believe every gymnast develops at their own pace. Our goal is to build a strong foundation before introducing more advanced skills. We prioritize safety, confidence, and long-term development over rushing to the next level. Mastery takes time, and repetition builds strength, skill, and confidence. We encourage families to celebrate progress, not just level changes.
How does my child move up to the next level?
If an instructor feels that a gymnast is consistently performing the required skills with proper technique and form, they may recommend the gymnast for an evaluation by one of our Floor Supervisors.
What happens if my gymnast does not pass?
If a gymnast isn’t ready to move up after a Floor Supervisor evaluation, it simply means they need more time to strengthen and refine certain skills. This is completely normal. Coaches will continue working with them in class and will reevaluate progress as they improve.
How can my child improve if they don’t pass the next level evaluation?
If a gymnast isn’t ready to move up, the Floor Supervisor will provide a conditioning sheet with exercises to practice at home. Coaches will continue focusing on skill refinement, strength building, and consistency during class to help the gymnast reach the next level.
My child has been in this level for a while. Why haven’t they advanced?
Gymnasts move up when they can consistently perform all required skills with proper technique, confidence, and control. Every child progresses at their own pace. Spending additional time in a level is normal and helps build a stronger foundation for future success and safety.
How long does it typically take to move up?
There is no set timeline for advancement. Progression depends on consistent skill mastery, strength, confidence, and proper technique rather than a specific number of months in a class.
What is a skill check?
Skill checks are structured evaluations where coaches assess whether a gymnast has mastered the required skills for their current level. Families may receive updates during skill check periods, but move-ups can also occur outside formal skill checks if a gymnast demonstrates readiness.

What’s the difference between skill checks and Floor Supervisor evaluations?
Floor Supervisor evaluations are one-on-one assessments after a coach’s recommendation, looking at overall readiness, including technique, strength, confidence, and consistency. In short, skill checks track specific skills, while Floor Supervisor evaluations assess overall readiness to move up.
How will I be notified if my child is ready to move up?
If a gymnast is ready for a level change, families will receive direct communication from our team. The front desk will assist with any schedule adjustments or enrollment updates as needed.
How does a gymnast get invited to Team?
Gymnasts are invited to Team through coach recommendation. Invitations are extended when a gymnast consistently demonstrates advanced-level skills, strong work ethic, focus, and readiness for a more rigorous training commitment.
