Level Progressions FAQs
Understanding Our Level Progressions at Viking Gymnastics
At Viking Gymnastics, our move-up process is designed to help each gymnast progress safely, confidently, and with strong fundamentals. Advancement is based on skill mastery, strength, consistency, and coach recommendation, not just time spent in a class.
We believe every gymnast develops at their own pace. Our goal is to build a strong foundation before introducing more advanced skills. We prioritize safety, confidence, and long-term development over rushing to the next level. Mastery takes time, and repetition builds strength, skill, and confidence. We encourage families to celebrate progress, not just level changes.
What is a skill check?

Skill checks are structured evaluations where coaches assess whether a gymnast has mastered the required skills for their current level. Families may receive updates during skill check periods, but move-ups can also occur outside formal skill checks if a gymnast demonstrates readiness.
What is the difference between a Skill Check and Floor Supervisor evaluation?

Floor Supervisor evaluations are one-on-one assessments conducted after a coach’s recommendation that evaluate overall readiness, including technique, strength, confidence, and consistency. In short, skill checks track specific skills, while Floor Supervisor evaluations assess overall readiness to move up.
How will I be notified if my child is ready to move up?

Following a Floor Supervisor evaluation, if a gymnast is ready to move up to the next level you will likely be informed in person if you are in the building. Client services will also send an email, as well as assist with any schedule adjustment or enrollment updates as needed.
How does my child move up to the next level?

If an instructor feels that a gymnast is consistently performing the required skills with proper technique and form, they may recommend the gymnast for an evaluation by one of our Floor Supervisors.
What happens if my gymnast does not pass?

If a gymnast isn’t ready to move up after a Floor Supervisor evaluation, it often means they need more time to refine certain skills or gain more consistency. Every athlete progresses at their own pace, it is okay if a gymnast does not move up following an evaluation. The coaches will support their needs in class while tracking their improvement.
How can my child improve if they don’t pass the next level evaluation?

If a gymnast is not yet ready to advance to the next level, the Floor Supervisor will share specific feedback on the areas they need to improve. Coaches will continue focusing on skill development, strength building, and consistency during class to help the gymnast reach the next level.
How long does it typically take to move up?

There is no set timeline for advancement. Progression depends on consistent mastery of skills, strength, confidence, and proper technique rather than on a specific number of months in a class.
My child has been in this level for a while. Why haven’t they advanced?

Gymnasts move up when they can consistently perform all required skills with proper technique, confidence, and control. Every child progresses at their own pace. Spending additional time in a level is normal and helps build a stronger foundation for future success and safety.
How does a gymnast get invited to Team?

If a coach has recommended a gymnast for one of our Developmental or Team programs, they will be evaluated by one of our Gymnastics Leaders. If the student is a strong candidate for one of our Developmental or Team programs, the student will be invited to participate in a trial. This trial helps assess whether the program is a good fit for the gymnast, their family, and the coaching staff. Our Gymnastics Leaders will email any information regarding competitive trials or invitations. If you are present when your child is seen by one of our Gymnastics Leaders, we will also attempt to connect in person. To learn about joining our Team program, visit our “Pathway to Team FAQs.”
