Adaptive Explorers

This is a parent/caregiver assisted, 1 hour drop-in gymnastics class for children with sensory or other support needs. While this is a drop-in class with no on-going weekly commitment, we do ask that you register for the class in advance, as there are a limited number of openings. Children will be led in a short group warm up and then participate in semi-structured obstacle courses and independent exploration of the gym.

WHEN:

  • Saturday, July 29th – 3:30-4:30pm and/or
  • Saturday, August 26th – 3:30-4:30pm

Adaptive Explorers is appropriate for children who may not be ready for an independent Open Gym or are not yet able to follow a structured class. We will offer a sensory-rich and safe environment for exploring movement and body awareness skills. Your child will have the opportunity to explore the gym with fewer demands and distractions than a typical class. *This class requires a parent or caregiver to accompany your child in the gym.*

Typically developing siblings will not be allowed to participate, as this is a special time for children with a diagnosis or disability.

Adaptive Explorers details:

  • For children 4 to 18 years old with a diagnosis or disability requiring some support or adaptation.
  • The dress code is a leotard or shorts/leggings and shirt, hair pulled back, no jewelry, and avoid zippers and snaps on clothing.
  • $20 per child
  • Register by emailing info@vikinggymnastics.com or by calling the front desk.
  • All participants must have a consent form on file.

What can my child and I expect?

  • When you enter the gym, you and your child will be led in a short group warm-up and stretch. The staff will review the rules and areas available in the gym. Your child is then welcome to explore the gym and equipment including simple obstacle courses, trampoline, foam bit, balance beams, and bars. At the end of class, we will have a group cool-down activity at the end.

Do I have to pay the annual membership/registration fee to participate in Adaptive Explorers?

  • No, the annual membership fee only applies to our regular weekly classes and camps, not open gyms or special events.

Do I need to stay with my child?

  • Yes, you are required to be with your child in the gym. Children will enter barefoot, adults may wear their socks.

Are siblings allowed to participate?

  • This is a special time for children with a disability, typically developing siblings are not allowed to participate.

If my child is overwhelmed with sensory needs, what can I expect from this environment?

  • The gym will be quieter and less busy at the time of this class, but it can be loud and echoey in the gym. There are many colors and textures throughout the gym. There will be a higher activity level in the gym, but if your child needs a break, you can walk down the quieter hallways or take a break in one of our side rooms.

We look forward to having a great time with you and your child!
